In the midst of the global refugee crisis, over 13,500 refugees and asylum seekers are known to have settled in Indonesia as of April 2016, a majority in Jakarta while the remainder in cities like Makassar, Medan and Batam. Although it may be small compared to neighboring countries in the region and 65 million people who had been forced to leave their homes due to war and persecutions in 2015, the numbers of asylum seekers taking Indonesia as their new homes continue to grow as they get trapped in transit while heading towards their destination countries, such as Australia and New Zealand. Refugees, mostly from Afganistan, Sudan and Somalia, are not able to legally work, leave their shelters, formally marry an Indonesian or gain citizenship, creating fatigue within the settlements as Indonesia finds itself hosting a growing number of asylum seekers over increasing periods.
